Dear Friends and Supporters,

Canadians have made their choice. The voters of Carleton – Mississippi Mills have done so too. Although the results are a significant disappointment, there is opportunity here as well and we must have the courage and commitment to move forward together.

We stood up for what we believed in. We stood up for our community and our country and each other. The results were a culmination of a number of transient factors that will surely change over the next 4 years. We must be ready to offer a thoughtful, responsible and compassionate alternative to the ideologies of division and polarization.

I want to thank each and every one of you for all the hard work that went into this campaign. I cannot possibly imagine a better team. You did everything possible, in the face of a clear split nationally between the Conservatives and the NDP. Despite being in a traditionally conservative riding, we had 35% more votes than the national average for the liberal party! In the face of the massive swing Gordon O’Connor saw his percentage of popular vote decline. Ours rose by 8%.

The Liberal Party has a long and proud tradition. We have 34 seats, in 1984 we had 40. We came back then and we will do it again.

The next months will be a period of uncertainty and a time for rebuilding. I ask you not to give up. I have not. We will need your energy and your commitment as we start down this road of renewal and regeneration.

You inspired me with your selflessness and your commitment to making the lives of all Canadians better. I am honoured that you chose to become a member of the team and was glad of your company during this campaign. I hope I will see you on the next phase of the journey, as together, we are always stronger.

My most sincere thanks,

Karen

“We Can Do This” Pledges Liberal candidate Karen McCrimmon today in Kanata

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Sunday, May 1.

Carleton-Mississippi Mills candidate Karen McCrimmon announced today that she has the numbers. “This is not a Blue riding. We have won it before and we will win it again.” Said McCrimmon

Since 2006, 12,000 new residents have moved into this riding. Karen McCrimmon explained, “In the 2008 election 8,000 liberals either stayed at home or parked their votes.” This election has clear issues that are close to home:

• Who do you trust to negotiate the next health accord; the party that brought universal health care to all Canadians or someone who was part of an organization that advocated for a two-tier system?
• Who do you trust to stand up for pensioners, the candidate who has pledged to support a solution or the candidate who voted against relief for Nortel Pensioners?
• The candidate who has spoken up against the expansion of the Carp Road landfill or the candidate who says that it is not his job?
• The candidate who supports the protection of the South March Highlands or the candidate who said that they are “nothing special”?
• The candidate who understands the value of an impartial public service and will stand up against attacks on the public sector.
• The candidate who supports the innovation that the high tech sector represents.

“The choice is clear,” said Karen McCrimmon “if people go out and think strategically they will vote for a candidate who can defeat Gordon O’Connor. Not an NDP candidate who has failed to attend any of the public meetings. Nor a Green Party candidate.”

“This riding has lost 29,000 high quality, good paying jobs” McCrimmon continues, “we need to rebuild our economic foundation. Together we can do this.”

Massive crowd gathers to support Liberal candidate Karen McCrimmon today in Kanata

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Saturday, April 30.

Kanata neighbourhoods were seeing red today, with over 100 Liberal supporters rallied behind Carleton-Mississippi Mills candidate Karen McCrimmon in a high-energy rally. Supporters including Senator Marie Poulin came out to push the former air force squadron commander’s campaign over the top as the best choice for the diverse riding. “The numbers are very encouraging” said McCrimmon “Over 15,000 had already voted in advance polls and when I held a virtual town hall, over 5,500 were on the line to have a conversation – and we were competing with game 7 of the Habs Bruins playoff.”

“People want a change,” Senator Poulin said. “Voters are tired of being taken for granted.”

Throughout the campaign, Ms. McCrimmon has seen supporters flock to her side, looking for an MP who will advocate for them. From pensions to healthcare, from education to child care, Karen McCrimmon and the Liberal Party’s impact on the riding was loud and clear today.

“I’ve been overwhelmed by the support we’ve seen from the residents of Carleton-Mississippi Mills throughout this campaign,” Ms. McCrimmon said. “From farm auctions to towns and into the city, there has been a clear call for change coming from all parts of the riding.” The candidates who attended the four all candidates’ meetings saw overflow audiences. “Canadians are concerned about our community and our country” commented McCrimmon. “People never before involved in politics have joined my campaign – they are offended by the actions of the Harper government”.

Among the many notable individuals standing firmly behind their Liberal candidate are:

-The Rt. Honourable Herb Grey PC CC QC, former Deputy Prime Minister
-The Honourable Eugene Whelan PC OC, former Minister of Agriculture
-The Honourable Judy Sgro
-The Honourable Dr. Carolyn Bennett
-Marianne Wilkinson, city councillor for Kanata North
-Al Lunney, retired Mayor of Mississippi Mills
-Senator Pierette Ringuette
-Senator Marie Poulin
-The Honourable Ian Murray
-The Honourable Marlene Catteral

Press Release April 29, 2011
For Immediate Release

Carleton-Mississippi Mills Liberal Candidate McCrimmon Speaks out on Open Internet.

Over the last 10 days of the campaign, former air force squadron commander Karen McCrimmon visited all areas of her riding. An experienced mediator, she listened to the concerns of the residents. One of the most significant challenges faced by Canadians in rural areas is having affordable high speed Internet. Unlike the Conservatives, a Liberal Government will oppose anticompetitive usage-based billing, support net neutrality, and foster an open, competitive and innovative internet environment.

“We are facing a division between digital haves and have-nots. This creates barriers to education, employment and economic advancement” said McCrimmon. Additionally, McCrimmon noted that restraints on the Internet are becoming restrictions on free speech.

The Internet is today’s principal conduit for the free flow of ideas. To ensure that it fosters the uninhibited exchange that innovation requires, Canada must maintain a healthy, open Internet environment. Internet traffic management must remain neutral, and maintain the open sharing of legitimate technologies, ideas and applications. A fair, effective wholesale regime is also essential to allow smaller Internet service providers to lease broadband infrastructure at fair prices.

A Liberal government will issue an Open Internet Directive to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), requiring that the CRTC promote the following principles when making any decisions that affect the Internet:

• The Internet must remain a public and open domain, allowing Canadians to access lawful applications, content, and entertainment residing anywhere online, using any lawful device of their choosing;

• Canadians cannot be subjected to Internet traffic management practices that stifle competition, reduce consumer choice and innovation, or unfairly discriminate or restrict user access to lawful Internet content; and

• Management of internet traffic must be transparent and ensure Canadians understand and have choice in how internet traffic is managed.

Karen McCrimmon commented that open accessible access to the Internet is critical to making us a community. “If it is not better for all, it’s just not better ” said McCrimmon on Thursday
